Advancing Electrolysis Technologies for Industrial-Scale Renewable Hydrogen Production Optimizing operational concepts

DELYCIOUS is driving innovation in three key electrolysis technologies—AEL, PEMEL, and SOEL.— The developed diagnostic and monitoring tool will be validate on lab-scale for all the three technologies, and demonstrated at large-scale (> 100 kW) on an AEL electrolyzer. The demonstration will bridge the gap with industrial scale applications, showcasing the scalability of the DELYCIOUS diagnostic and monitoring tools.
To bridge the gap for industrial-scale applications, DELYCIOUS will demonstrate its innovative concept at a demonstrator scale (TRL6), showcasing AEL technology as a scalable and robust solution.

Strategic Project Objectives

Develop a Flexible Test Platform

Create a lab-scale testing environment adaptable to various electrolysis technologies.

Advanced Hardware Sensors

Implement and optimize sensors to monitor and detect electrolysis degradation mechanisms.

Large-Scale Demonstration

Validate the functionality, resilience, and scalability of tools, sensors, and EMS at systems exceeding 100 kW.

Cutting-Edge Algorithms

Develop advanced algorithms for a comprehensive understanding of degradation processes.

Open-Access Software Platform

Establish an Energy Management System (EMS) alongside an open-access monitoring and diagnostic platform.

Roadmap to Commercialization

Develop a clear roadmap to support commercial utilization by 2030 and guide large-scale deployment.

Expected Impacts

DELYCIOUS Impact Vision

By 2028, DELYCIOUS aims to deliver advanced online monitoring and diagnostic tools for large-scale electrolysers, validated at TRL 6. This will guide the upscaling of these technologies to TRL 9 by 2030, paving the way for further development.

DELYCIOUS delivers advanced real-time monitoring and diagnostic tools, integrating hardware (Raman spectroscopy, EIS) and virtual sensors (algorithms, 3D models). Applicable across AEL, PEMEL, and SOEL technologies, these tools predict 95% of faults and enhance system reliability.

OUTCOME 1
Provide new product ideas and solutions addressing monitoring and diagnostics of electrolysis systems, including hardware and software.
DELYCIOUS enhances large-scale electrolyser operations by enabling real-time monitoring, fault diagnosis, and reduced degradation through AI-driven tools and detailed user guidelines. By 2040, it aims for >95% fault prediction, lower OPEX, improved reliability, and reduced electrolyser costs.
OUTCOME 2
Secure safe operation of large-scale systems and reduce the cost of ownership.

DELYCIOUS extends electrolyser lifespan and reliability; and by 2040, it aims for 99% reliability, commercial adoption, and industry-standard solutions, enhancing green hydrogen production at lower costs.

OUTCOME 3
Extend lifetime of electrolysers under fluctuating electricity input conditions.
DELYCIOUS aims to enhance electrolyser performance, targets large-scale deployment and standardization, reducing total costs of ownership, and enabling greater renewable energy integration.
DELYCIOUS contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by driving innovations in clean hydrogen production (SDG7), fostering industrial advancement (SDG9), reducing reliance on fossil fuels (SDG12), and supporting climate action (SDG13).
DELYCIOUS pioneers advanced technologies at the crossroads of electrolysis, digitalization, and control systems, generating valuable insights into health monitoring, fault detection, and performance optimization for hydrogen and related sectors. By fostering R&D, mentorship, and open access to data, it empowers academic, industrial, and professional communities, enhancing workforce skills and inspiring next-generation innovations.
In 2023, the global water electrolysis market reached approximately €2 billion, driven by investments in 3 GW of capacity, with significant growth potential due to increasing demand for green hydrogen.
DELYCIOUS enhances renewable hydrogen production economics, addressing both new projects and energy-efficient upgrades. With Europe as a key growth region and global capacity projected to reach 175 GW by 2030, DELYCIOUS partners are well-positioned to meet critical market needs for deep decarbonization across industries.
